COMPLICATIONS DUE TO DIABETES

• Carbohydrate, protein and lipid (fats) metabolism is altered
• A narrowing of the large and small blood vessels
• High blood pressure
• High cholesterol & triglycerides (with the attendant risk of heart attack and stroke)
• Retinopathy (blindness) may occur
• Kidney damage (may lead to need for dialysis, transplant)
• Gastric (digestive system) problems
• Neuropathy (nerve damage)...numbness of hands and feet - failing circulation, sometimes leading to gangrene and the necessity of amputation
• Slow healing of wounds due to poor circulation
• Impotence
