Glucose or blood sugar comes from the foods we eat. It's our body's basic fuel.
Your pancreas makes a hormone, insulin, which helps your body's cells take in
the glucose they need.
Type 1 diabetes
usually appears in children, teens and young adults. In type 1 diabetes, the immune
system has mistakenly destroyed the pancreatic cells that make insulin. The person
with type 1 diabetes must take insulin regularly and at the right times to allow
their cells to be fueled.
Type 2 diabetes
used to be called adult onset diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can develop at any age.
In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas fails to make enough insulin for the amount of
blood sugar your diet is providing, and the body fails to use the available insulin
efficiently - a condition called "insulin resistance".
North American society's lifestyle seems to be producing a virtual epidemic of
type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is often preventable if a person makes lifestyle adjustments.
It's certainly manageable.
